Hot top casting machine involves installing a heat-insulating hot-top hood made of refractory material at the upper part of the DC (direct water-cooled) casting mold, eliminating the traditional funnel and achieving lateral flow supply. The metal liquid level inside the hot-top remains at the same height as the level in the flow plate, ensuring constant static pressure of the molten aluminum and reducing the solidification position of the melt in the mold. This enables stable low-mold casting and level casting. The hot-top casting mold primarily consists of two parts: a heat-insulating hot-top section, which maintains the temperature of the melt and keeps the upper molten metal level in the ingot; and a non-insulated cooling section (i.e., the effective crystallization zone), typically only 20–50 mm in height, responsible for shaping the ingot .
This technology of hot top casting table can increase the cooling rate of the ingot, reduce the depth of the liquid hole and narrow the transition zone, thereby improving the density, microstructure uniformity, and uniform distribution of chemical composition along the ingot cross-section. Due to the small height of the mold cooling section and the strong countercurrent cooling effect of secondary cooling water, it can effectively prevent the secondary remelting of the solidified shell, thereby inhibiting the formation of segregation lumps; it also prevents premature cooling of the molten metal surface, stabilizes the two-phase zone, effectively suppresses cold shuts, and reduces the extent and depth of inverse segregation in the peripheral layer of the ingot.
